I had a 3.7 GPA in high school and very high SAT scores. I led a group to Chile my sophomore year in high school on a humanitarian mission, also was President of Model UN. Played 2 Varsity sports in high school and was a Eucharistic Minister.

I had a 3.8 weighted GPA in high school with a total of 7 AP courses and my SATS were 1310. I played 2 varsity sports and was VP of our student government group. I also traveled to Brazil to study for two summer. VOlunteerism is huge at 'Nova so I did a huge portion of that as well.

I was waitlisted and then accepted for the 1999 admissions cycle.

Well, unfortunately all colleges are going to look at your numbers. SAT scores are inordinately important and tutoring and test-prep are well worth the effort. GPA and course difficulty are also important, but a great SAT test score seems to impress a lot of colleges. If you have had a hardship or impediment it doesn't hurt to mention it in your essays. Colleges will also see your numbers in a better light if your parents are less educated.
